This is a still life painting that I put hours of prep work into, doing things such as experimenting with color on canvas paper, taking a high resolution picture of my objects, and practicing new techniques of underpainting I had never tried before. I created balance in my composition between objects and fruit by placing the kettle and the deer skull on either side. I strategically referenced works from Paul Cezanne in order to develop the colors in a way I was satisfied with. Color and proportion were very important aspects to me, I used subtractive underpainting to develop the values prior to painting which made making decisions on color much easier. I applied the complimentary colors of blue and orange throughout to unify the piece and accentuate contrast, switching between applying paint with a palette knife and a brush throughout.
