These portraits were very experimental, as well as enjoyable. I had Noel, one of my school’s figure models, sit for my first portrait. With this one I was attempting to capture the colors naturalistically, but ended up doing one layer of shorter brushstrokes in an impressionist style. I had each of these people sit for 30 minutes or more, with my second one I had them sit for the sketch and some of the painting. I moved on to bright colors, where I would focus on the light and shadow of the face. Proportion has been a priority with this project, so I ensured that there was a likeness. I balanced the harsh and soft mixture of light and shadow to enhance the piece. My third to last portrait is probably my favorite, with the confrontational and melancholy look of the subject addressing the viewer. This piece was done in an achromatic scheme with a palette knife for everything but details. I used the larger size of the knife to block out my shadows before going in and controlling mid tones and highlights. I mixed greens with my blue to add more life to the color, using both cooler and warmer blues. The bright color in the background creates contrast against the figure’s dark hair. My last portrait was an attempt at realism, where I used multiple layers to build up the life in the skin and the detail of the futures.
