This piece was the most fun I’ve ever had with a painting, which is saying a lot. I had been attached to this section of Falls Park, the park outside my school, for a long time. I’d already had multiple photos of the tree bending over this section of the river at dusk, and I knew that I needed to paint it. The canvas was covered in acrylic wash, where I then began to under-paint the directionality of the tree branches in oil. Preliminary work was very important for me for this project. I took a photo of the piece and painted in my color scheme digitally before beginning, so I knew exactly what I wanted. I created simpler shapes for the foliage towards the mid and background of the painting, focusing on the warm values that captured the scene. I took inspiration from impressionist artists such as John Singer Sargent, as well as modernist artists such as Charles Burchfield. I controlled the tone of the colors in order to limit vibrancy to the yellows that illuminate the water and patches of grass in the foreground. I captured each form in short brushstrokes that were diverse in shape, often allowing the paint to thicken and make a texture atop the canvas. Some of both the darkest and lightest values are used in the tree, drawing the eye to it and the intricate painting of the bark.
