The abstracted concept in this tile is the hair, which is sculpted to resemble fire. The match in the man’s hand adds a layer of complexity, to me symbolizing self destruction. The serene and resigned look on the man’s face implies his contentment with his situation. I balanced subtractive and additive sculpture, and was challenged by the limitations for how far I could build a relief sculpture while still making the proportion convincing. I utilized the finish in a way that would enhance a texture that creates an aged appearance on the terra-cotta.
