I began this piece with inspiration from fields of tall grass and farmhouses I saw on a roadtrip across the east coast awhile back. I’m fascinated by the scenery, imagining the lives of the people who live in such a lonely looking place. When it comes to composition, I was inspired by Andrew Wyeth. I wished to create movement in the tall grass that follows the sort of contorted dance the figure is in. I individually painted many of the blades of grass in order to retain detail, but began to paint shapes which lessened In complexity further back. This piece is done majorly in gouache, with oil pastel in the figures dress. Both the flock of ravens and the twisting road lead to a house, which sits towards the top left of the composition. I wanted to communicate a story of freedom as well as loneliness and isolation with this piece. The farmhouse is a place of dread, with the storm festering over it the thickest. I focused much of my attention on color, keeping the tones naturalistic while also experimenting with subtle undertones of reds and blues.
